Lautan Variasi Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian telecommunications firm based in Cyberjaya provide a country-wide satellite broadband service. According to Managing Director Syed Nasir Hussin Syed, “We offer nationwide satellite broadband coverage for our Internet data as well as fast and reliable broadband Internet service to our customers. Our coverage includes all terrestrial, coastal, island and offshore area.”
The company mentions that the firm is already in operation even in far-flung localities such as Sabah. Their client list is growing, including plantations and even the Sarawak Land Development Board.
Potential of Satellite Technology
Lautan Variasi utilizes IPSTAR-1 and Measat-5 satellites to provide their clients with unhindered broadband coverage. Syed Nasir is confident in their expertise and deployment of satellite, wireless, security, and cloud technologies to deliver terabytes worth of data securely in real time from space.
“A satellite in the geosynchronous orbit can cover around 33% of the earth’s surface and can provide connectivity to any region covered by it. A satellite can also focus on a particular high-density region and multiple satellites can work together to provide global coverage. This is very useful for remote locations like rural areas, ships and coastal regions, hills, etc. where there is limited or no terrestrial connectivity.” said Syed Nasir.
The regional satellite systems that the company has acquired have the capacity to cover 22 Asia-Pacific countries. They utilize Ku-Band and Ka-Band spectrums.
At present, Lautan Variasi does not compete in urban localities with telcos. It has yet to invest in fiber optic cabling as well as other communication transmissions and is focused primarily on satellite coverage. The company also has future development prospects in Indo China and Timor Leste.
