MyanmarSat-2, Satellite System for launch in 2019

The Burmese central government is planning for a launch of MyanmarSat-2 a satellite system for Myanmar by 2019. The state-owned satellite system dubbed Myanmar Sat-2 will handle a large role in providing connectivity throughout the country.

In a coordination meeting of the steering committee in Nay Pyi Taw, Vice President U Myint stated that “To establish state-owned satellite system, the three ways — Condosat which is to lease the use of satellite transponder of another country, joint ownership system, and total ownership system — are needed to be done”.

Myanmar Sat-2 is to be operated on a joint ownership system. On the other hand, the MyanmarSat-1,  the country’s first satellite project, is designated for use via a lease system. The overall cost of the project is estimated to be in the area of 155.7 billion USD.  Vice President Myint has recommended to the committee that the satellite transponder should be protected under an Indefeasible Right of Use as part of the contract. He also urged the ministries that currently work with the foreign MyanmarSat-1 to revert to MyanmarSat-2 once their contracts have expired.

Myanmar’s government is making a great step forward with MyanmarSat-2. The most obvious beneficiary will be the local telecommunications sector. Cellular tower installation is difficult due to an unreliable power network, inadequate infrastructure, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. This has made cellular and broadband coverage challenging. Satellite operations can help bridge this gap temporarily as land-based infrastructure catches up.

In addition, various government ministries can make use of the satellite technology for the implementation of various programs. More governments are turning to satellite technology to improve defense, communications, disaster response, and conservation programs.
